Ageing of thermal insulation materials

(in collaboration with SPU Isolering AB)

Supervisor: Pär Johansson, PhD student

Long term properties of different thermal insulation materials such as EPS/XPS, mineral wool and PUR/PIR are important to consider in the design of buildings. Some materials will change with time and others will be more stable. This work focuses on the long term ageing and its effect on the thermal conductivity. Different accelerated ageing measurement methods will be evaluated and tested in laboratory.

Renovation of brick buildings

Supervisors: Axel Berge, PhD student and Tomas Gustavsson, Tomas Gustavsson konstruktioner AB

There is a large need for renovation of old buildings in order to comply with new building codes and the aim to drastically decrease the energy use in the world. With the wish to preserve the cultural heritage of brick buildings, an inside insulation is often used to decrease transmission losses. The aim of this thesis is to find durable solutions, and in order to find durable solutions the heat and moisture condition of the renovated construction needs to be assessed. The assessment will be made using numerical solutions and guidelines will be produced. posted October 8, 2013

Measurement of U-value and energy performance of buildings in operating conditions

in collaboration with the Swedish testing institute, SP

Supervisors: Pär Johansson, PhD student and Eva-Lotta Kurkinen, PhD (SP)

There is a great need for the assessment of the energy performance of buildings in use. There is currently no standardized method for this. The purpose of this work is to investigate which methods are available and provide recommendations on how a possible new method could work based on literature reviews, interviews, computer simulations, etc.
